Why use Flashcards?
In order to be effectively consolidated into long-term memory, information needs to be reviewed shortly after it’s learned.
Here are the real benefits of using flashcards:
- The portability of flash cards can improve efficiency in learning new material. The ability to take the cards everywhere allows students to make effective use of their time when they would otherwise not be studying, such as using them on the bus, on breaks, or while walking on the treadmill.
- One mistake students often make when studying for classes is trying to learn too much material at once. This can make the learning process cumbersome and overwhelming. Flash cards eliminate extraneous material as they allow one to focus on only the most important elements of what they need to learn.
- Flashcards can be utilized for virtually any subject. They make a perfect learning tool for memorizing vocabulary, foreign languages, math formulas, dates and events and even more advanced topics, like chemistry equations and medical terminology.
- Since the order can be shuffled, flash cards prevent students from simply memorizing the order of answers. Students can also reverse the flash cards so the answers can be seen first. This allows students to learn material in multiple ways, increasing retention.
Who's Behind the Website?
The idea for the StudyBuddy Flashcard Study Aide site was dreamt up during a school lecture at the British Columbia Institute of Technology in Vancouver, Canada. After watching a demonstration showing how to flip an image and see text on the backside of it using new CSS3 functionality, founder Chris Brenner wondered what other applications this technique could be used for. Having used flashcards many times to assist with studying throughout his prior years at school he decided to see if he could transfer the process of using a pen and paper to study with flashcards to using online tools instead. This would eliminate the need to carry flashcards around but still enable students to study on the go with laptops, tablets and mobile devices.
